This week was tough. It was one of those weeks at work you hope doesn’t repeat anytime soon. Our executive team had to face a string of staff and business challenges that didn’t have quick fixes.
Sometimes, when problems can’t be solved overnight, what people need most is encouragement. I picked up the phone to remind one of our executives who deals directly with some of these issues of a few truths that I think apply to all of us:
Take it one day at a time.
Tomorrow is a new beginning, and perseverance is one of the greatest strengths we can develop.
Protect your inner joy.
Don’t hand over your peace of mind to things outside your control. Manage them, but don’t let them manage you.
Pressure is a privilege.
Not everyone gets the opportunity to carry responsibility. And not everyone who does will succeed – But you can.
Business is our sport. In South Africa, we love our sports teams. But while we can’t play on the field, we have our own arena – our businesses. Our employees are our teams, and leadership is about guiding, encouraging, and adjusting when things don’t click, and in some cases, even having to replace key team members. Some days the team won’t perform; other days everything flows. What matters is stamina, vision, and the will to keep pushing forward.
